AV8 Flight School is delighted to congratulate Santa Claus, their latest student to be awarded an A2 Certificate of Competence (A2 CofC) in anticipation of the new UK drone laws that come into effect on the 31st December 2020.
Speaking at a recent event, Mr Claus commented "Living and working at the North Pole, it's tough to travel, so AV8 were the obvious choice. I wanted to do it online as work's really hectic at the moment; with AV8 I could study whenever I wanted, even the exam was on-demand".
Mr Claus intends to use his new certification as part of Project Skydrop, an experimental initiative to deliver Christmas gifts using lightweight drones from 2021 onwards.
An Elf close to the project said "86% of Santa's gifts weigh less than 5kg, and with the Big Guy's Christmas magic, we figure we can get that down to about 18 grams during the final delivery phase. We're going to use really lightweight drones that keep the total flying weight under 500 grams. With the A2 CofC we can then legally fly and deliver in residential areas without having to worry too much about separation. It was mainly my idea. Did I mention it was my idea? Make sure you get my name right".
As part of a three-year training deal with AV8, Santa has plans to put all his Elves through the A2 course, as the project moves out of the proof-of-concept stage, followed by upgrading key members of staff to the full General VLOS Certificate (GVC) as the operation grows.
