The Certification

Our GVC upgrade course (combined) gives you the best of both worlds: operate under your CAA permission when you need to; fly under your A2 CofC for those fast, simple tasks. No matter where or when you completed your PfCO course, you can upgrade provided you have a current CAA permission. For the vast majority of operators, a flight assessment isn't required (see below).

Your GVC will allow you to:

  • Apply to the CAA for an Operational Authorisation
  • Fly drones up to 25kg
  • Fly to within 50m of uninvolved people (measured as a bubble around the drone), reduced to 30m when taking off and landing
  • Fly within congested / built up areas (areas used for recreational, commercial, residential and industrial purposes)

Until 31st December 2022 your A2 CofC will allow you to:

  • fly your sub-500g drone with no restrictions on proximity to uninvolved people (but not directly overhead) (A1 subcategory)
  • fly your sub-2kg drone to within 50m of uninvolved people (A2 subcategory)
  • fly without the usual 150m separation distance from places used by people (residential, recreational, industrial, commercial areas)
  • fly your drone in the A2 (Open) subcategory (drones up to 2kg) and the A1 subcategory (drones up to 500 grams)

Your A2 CofC will allow you to:

  • fly your drone in the A2 (Open) subcategory (appropriately C-marked drones up to 4kg) and the A1 subcategory (appropriately C-marked drones up to 900 grams)
  • fly without the usual 150m separation distance from places used by people (residential, recreational, industrial, commercial areas)
  • fly your sub-4kg C-marked drone to within 30m of uninvolved people (reduced to 5m when in slow speed mode) (A2 subcategory)
  • fly your sub-900g C-marked drone with no restrictions on proximity to uninvolved people (but not directly overhead) (A1 subcategory)

The Course

Enrolling in our CAA approved combined course is inexpensive, fast and available to anyone. You'll study three core modules (Flight Performance, Flight Operations & Meteorology) for the A2 CofC, each followed by a practice question bank to embed what you've learned. A fourth GVC-specific module contains all the new legislation and a refresher on risk management; when you're ready to take your exam you simply login, select a time and follow the set up instructions. Nothing could be simpler.

Your certificates are issued automatically and once the new CAP722A is published we'll contact you with advice on how to update your operations manual to the new standards. We can then review your updated version to confirm it meets all the new criteria.

Course Requirements

This course can only be taken by operators who have a current CAA permission or who are named remote pilots on someone else's CAA permission. Additionally, in order to be exempted the practical flight assessment you must have flown at least 120 minutes in the last 3 months and have flown with a reasonable degree of regularity over the last 12 months (or since you passed your PfCO course if less than 12 months ago).

In order to complete the course exam, you must:

  • Have completed the CAA's Drone and Model Aircraft online training course and test and be in possession of a valid Flyer ID (This is free to complete and can be done in less than 30 minutes)
  • Have completed a period of practical flight training (either formally or under 'self monitored' conditions). This must be conducted in the A3 (Open) Category (i.e. far from people) but simulating the conditions of the A2 (Open) Category (i.e. close to people)
  • We recommend that you practice for at least 2 hours at a location far from people but fly as though you are flying close to people. The course includes some practice activities to help you hone your skills!
  • Have an internet connection speed of at least 2Mbps (This is needed in order to get the most from the course and to take your online exam)
  • Have access to a suitable enabled laptop / desktop with a webcam, speakers and microphone (mobile access to course material is optional)
  • Have access to an appropriate small unmanned aircraft
